Household-run bakery with XL beef rendang curry puffs & banana balls since 1997

Those that know me personally know that I’m completely obsessive about puff pastry and curry puffs. I chanced upon Sha Zah Confectionery, a family-run enterprise that’s been located on the streets of Joo Chiat since 1997.

My mouth was watering as I used to be searching by way of their Fb web page. It showcased a complete vary of curry puffs with a wide range of fillings enfolded in gorgeous-looking puff pastry— I used to be decided to pay them a go to!

It was 10am at Joo Chiat as I made my manner down, strolling previous endless rows of outlets and eateries alongside the road with the scorching solar above me. After a brief stroll, I arrived at Sha Zah Confectionery with beads of sweat trickling down my brow and again.

I noticed a makcik on the stall entrance organising the counter and preparing for the day’s operation. The stall seemed so quaint and jogged my memory of my major faculty tuckshop stall from the 90’s period. The glass show in entrance had Epok Epok (S$2 for five items) with sardine and potato fillings, and towers of muruku stored in massive plastic containers.

It was a breath of contemporary air to see old school scenes like this versus the stylish and fashionable cafes on the town— I suppose I’m an outdated soul.

What I attempted at Sha Zah Confectionery

Sha Zah Confectionery is a grab-and-go place with no tables and chairs so that you can benefit from the pastries. I purchased a wide range of goodies to savour and headed elsewhere to strive them.

I kickstarted my morning with the Potato Curry Puff (S$1.30). The dimensions of the large samosa lookalike was bigger than my hand— it was hugeeee!

I proceeded to chew by way of the puff pastry, which felt like 50 layers in my mouth. It was shatteringly crispy and messy in a great way because the bits of pastry had been flying everywhere— positively not one thing you must have on a primary date!

The potato filling inside was mildly spiced with curry and chillies. Whereas the insides had been fairly scrumptious, my eating companion and I felt that the pastry itself might be barely extra flavourful and extra flaky.

I moved on to the subsequent merchandise, the Banana Balls (S$2 for five items). The spherical puffy balls had been properly colored in various shades of golden brown, some barely darker because of the pure sugars of the banana.

The feel inside wasn’t dense and the outer layer was pleasantly skinny and crispy. I’m glad that my style buds managed to benefit from the banana flavour with out it being too overpowering. If solely I had a pot of heat tea with me then, these Banana Balls would have been the proper afternoon tea snack!

Lastly, the Beef Rendang Curry Puff (S$2.50) was subsequent— the pièce de résistance of my morning breakfast. It was an enormous rectangle pastry with a bit of hill popping up within the center, with tiny diamond-shaped home windows on its “slopes” revealing the darkish treasure inside… the meat rendang filling!

It’s not on a regular basis that you simply get beef rendang (a dish that I really like) enveloped inside puff pastry. I couldn’t comprise my pleasure as I proceeded to have a go.

The meat filling was actually beneficiant with its thick large chunks of meat which had been so tender and yummy from the marinated rendang spices.

As quickly as you’ve savoured these comfortable beefy chunks of meat, you’ll be greeted with the spiced chunky potato filling hiding beneath with chilli bits strategically positioned, to hit you with tiny sensations of spice once in a while.

sha zah confectionery - vadeh

In each institution, there are positively objects that pale compared to others. The Vadeh (S$2 for five items) was one such instance. The feel was dense and barely powerful for me, and there wasn’t a lot style as in comparison with different vadehs I’ve tried earlier than. I wanted they’d assessment their recipe to enhance on the consuming expertise.

For the final merchandise on as we speak’s puff pastry journey, I introduced the Hen Curry Puff (S$2) residence to pair it with the packets of chilli that was given to me for each puff that I purchased.

Although the pastries had been travelling with me on the bus journey residence for 20 minutes, they had been nonetheless good and crispy once I acquired again.

You could have a selection of both dunking the huge puffs within the chilli or slathering them over the puffs (like what I did). The chilli was three-dimensional in style: tangy, spicy and candy. It made consuming the curry puff really feel like a distinct expertise altogether, and helped cut back the richness of it— positively one thing I’d advocate.

I regretted not pairing my pastries with the chilli earlier, it was simply too troublesome to cope with the sauce outside! Nevertheless, with that being mentioned, I felt that the style of the potatoes dominated the hen, I couldn’t style any distinction between the Hen Curry Puff and the Potato Curry Puff I had earlier on.
