Jesse Harris, ‘Hummingbird’ : #NowPlaying : NPR

Secret Solar Recordings

Starting with a chilly, shallow wash of percussion adopted by gentle, heat traces from his acoustic guitar, Jesse Harris units a hanging and spare tone for the cabaret dreamscape that follows in “Hummingbird,” from the album Silver Balloon.

By a smoky haze of half-remembrance, Harris coaxes us alongside his wobbling, shuffle-tempo jazz mutation. His voice, like a transmission by an outdated cellphone line, describes the encounter: “Like an angel you’ll fly away someplace / Within the sky someplace and disappear / Earlier than you sing me a track / Abruptly you might be gone / Hummingbird had been you even there?”
